Overview

Ayong Ikan Bakar & Dessert stands as a compelling culinary destination in Johor Bahru’s bustling Taman Daya district. Nestled in a spacious two-shoplot venue along Jalan Daya, this restaurant elevates traditional Malaysian flavors with a focus on grilled seafood and refreshing local desserts. For diners seeking a casual yet comfortable atmosphere, Ayong offers an inviting retreat from the city’s frenetic pace, appealing to families, seafood lovers, and casual food enthusiasts alike.

The restaurant shines most brightly through its namesake, the ikan bakar—marinated and flame-grilled fish that captures a perfect balance of smoky aroma and vibrant local spices. Complementing this are beloved Malaysian staples such as rojak petis and fruit rojak, which deliver layers of tangy, sweet, and savory notes that invigorate the palate. Noteworthy is their specialty tauhu bakar, stuffed beancurd dressed in traditional sauce, an exemplary dish praised for its delicate harmony of flavors without overpowering spice.

Dessert remains a strong highlight here, with offerings like the ais kacang chocolate and the refreshing kelapa laut ais that marry creativity with nostalgic appeal. The array of traditional shaved ice desserts demonstrates thoughtful attention to local tastes, perfect to cool down after a hearty ikan bakar feast. Beverage options like fresh watermelon juice and the unique sea coconut drink offer a refreshing counterpoint, underscoring the restaurant’s commitment to a well-rounded Malaysian dining experience.

Service at Ayong Ikan Bakar & Dessert garners positive remarks for its polite and prompt staff, enhancing the dining experience without overshadowing the food itself. The layout, which spans two shoplots, creates an open, airy environment that contrasts with the often cramped settings typical of similar eateries. However, its location slightly away from central Johor Bahru means some visitors may contend with traffic and accessibility, a fair trade-off for the quality and ambiance provided.

Overall, Ayong Ikan Bakar & Dessert caters to those who appreciate authentic Malay seafood dishes served in a comfortable space without compromising on flavor or tradition. It particularly suits families and groups who seek quality meals in a more relaxed setting, away from the hustle of the city center. Whether you're drawn by the allure of grilled fish or the charm of classic desserts, Ayong offers a genuinely enjoyable dining experience that honors local culinary heritage with every bite.

Proper food, proper price, proper environment. Food was delicious. We ordered ais kacang, cikong ais, sotong kangkung, tauhu bakar. Genuinely sedap, flavourful. Ais kacang je average but thats not really a problem. It just nice.

A halal food eatery serving grill seafood dishes. Service is fast and polite. Grilled Stringray is delicious. Comes with its own blend of sauces. Tauhu rojak (stuffed fried beancurd with vegetable variant) also another recommended dish. Bean curd dressed with traditional malaysian sauce that is not too spicy or salty. The new dish buttermilk sotong(cuttlefish) serve with white rice. Rich in flavour but blends well when eaten with white rice. Dishes are reasonably priced. Come early on the weekend as the place has limited table seating during peak dining hours.

The first time to the restaurant at this location. Our usual Ayong stall is at Tepian Tebrau. This is a proper restaurant (occupying two shoplots) that is more comfy, more space and less crowded. Food wise (taste, presentation, variety, menu etc.) is almost the same except it offers an additional menu for freshly prepared wok, stir-fry rice or noodles. We enjoyed our dinner. The only drawback for us was the distance from JB town and the traffic was not smooth and considered congested.

Well for this restaurant i think for this seafood style restaurant and for the first time also eating in this branch, personally i think it was good in every aspects. Staff were very friendly and I get to talk to the owner which in the picture about thier establishment. Food wise, it was also scrumptious and thier spiciness level was quite medium since some of my nephews can still eat it. The environment was lively when i came but i dont want to praise too much since it was the Eid holidays. Overall I think this restaurant is beautiful in its own way.

We decided to try this place instead of Tepian Tebrau due to its convenient location. The food met my expectations but didn't surpass them. The restaurant is situated in a shopping area with ample parking and has an inviting atmosphere. It is also very clean. We ordered through a QR code and the food arrived within 5-10 minutes. The service was superb. As for the dishes, the Sotong Kangkung was decent but lacked cucumber for added crunchiness, which is a personal preference of mine. The highlight of the visit was the Cantonese Kueyteow. The gravy had a well-balanced flavor and the kueyteow was perfectly cooked, not soggy or over/undercooked. It was packed with seafood and fish cakes. Additionally, there were options of cili potong or cili jeruk (or both) to enhance the spiciness of the dish. However, the ABC dessert was disappointing as it was missing the compulsory buah kabung and had a strange green jelly-like substance. Unfortunately, we came specifically for the ABC and were let down. On a positive note, the Kelapa laut ice was not overly sweet and we enjoyed it. Would I visit again? Yes, especially with the easy parking but next time, I will give sotong Kangkung & ABC a miss.

The food is really cooked with lots of effort from the taste can experience the essence from it. The watermelon juice was out of my expectation because the juice was fresh, it was sweet but not overboard. Ikan bakar was amazing and my mom loves it very much. The staffs all were extremely friendly and always carry a smiley face. Environment was also very clean and hygiene as well.
